The Origin of HODL
On December 18, 2013, at 10:03 AM UTC, a BitcoinTalk forum member named GameKyuubi changed crypto history forever. During a Bitcoin crash from ~$1,150 to ~$550, he typed "I AM HODLING" — a legendary drunken post that became the defining philosophy of cryptocurrency. The typo was never corrected. Instead, it became immortal — later backronymed to "Hold On for Dear Life."
What is HODL?
HODL is a misspelling of "hold" that became crypto's most iconic meme and investment philosophy. It represents the conviction to hold your cryptocurrency through market crashes rather than panic-selling. GameKyuubi proved this philosophy correct — Bitcoin was ~$550 at the time of his post and has since reached over $126,000.
